* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PDM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* Feedback on readers' questions *
This issue contains our PDM Progress 2000 survey - but first some more information about CPC. In our previous issue, we included several questions from readers about the recently invented Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC). In response we received a link which leads to the original article (in PDF) by Jack Maynard of the Aberdeen Group in which CPC was introduced, and in which the following text appears: 'Collaborative Product Commerce defines a class of software and services that uses Internet technologies to permit individuals – no matter what role they have in the commercialization of a product, no matter what computer-based tools they use, no matter where they are located geographically or within the supply net – to collaboratively develop, build and manage products throughout their entire life cycle.'

We also received, from other readers, the following examples of vendors supplying CPC technology: Centric, Framework, NexPrise, PTC, CommerceOne, Ariba, HIS, SDRC, Spicer, Aspect, Agile, MatrixOne, Spatial, Enovia, CoCreate, SAP, Informative Graphics, UGS, Cimmetry, EAI, Hummingbird, Cyco Software, Motiva, Applicast, AristaSoft, .... from which it looks as if CPC may include anything related to managing and accessing product development information over the Internet.

Other readers sent a link to an interesting Windchill FAQ that includes the following text: 'Similar to ERP, CPC is a compilation of many submarkets, including PDM, VPDM, visualization, document management, CSM, CAD/CAM/CAE, CAPE, product planning, requirements management, and MRO.'

And according to Ed Miller, President of CIMdata, collaborative Product Definition Management (cPDm) is provided through a combination of best-practices processes and a full suite of technologies such as product data management, collaboration, visualization, collaborative product commerce, enterprise applications integration, component supplier management, and others.

* Does it matter which acronym you use? *
It doesn't matter which acronyms you use provided everybody involved in your product development systems initiative - you, the rest of your company, your suppliers, your customers – have a common understanding of what you are trying to achieve (the vision) and how you will achieve it (the strategy). But without a common understanding either you won't succeed or you'll succeed much later than planned. (Our Engineering Strategy and Engineering Vision reports provide a background to developing strategy and vision.)

* PDM Progress 2000 survey *
All users and implementers of PDM and related systems (such as EDM, EDMS, EDM/PDM, PDM/EDM, PIM, PDMS, TDM and TIM) are asked to reply to the one question in this survey.

As there's just one question for you to answer, please take a few minutes to participate. The results of the survey will be published in the next issue of 2PDM on Monday April 24. No information about individual answers to the survey will be published. We will not mention the name of anyone who participates or the name of their company. Replies are confidential and will not be made available to third parties.

The objective of this survey is to see how much progress is being made to achieving the PDM goals. It's useful for user companies to benchmark their progress and it's useful for vendors to understand the status of user companies. (Readers who were not with us in 1998 may like to refer to the questions and results of our 1998 survey.)

We are using PDM here as an acronym for Product Data Management. Related acronyms include EDM, EDMS, EDM/PDM, PDM/EDM, PIM, PDMS, TDM and TIM. Please feel free when reading the following texts to mentally replace PDM by your preferred acronym.

*Four Stages of PDM progress*
Companies go through four stages of PDM progress. The four stages are:
Stage 1 - Traditional ; Stage 2 - Awakening ; Stage 3 - Adapting ; Stage 4 - Leading

*Stage 1 - Traditional*
Companies at this stage have characteristics such as:
  • are not using a PDM system or are piloting a PDM system
  • rarely (i.e. less than 15% of exchanges) exchange data over a network with customers or supply chain partners
  • manually manage more than 75% of engineering drawings on traditional media (e.g. paper, microfilm)
  • don't have a clear and commonly agreed approach to PDM
  • don't understand that product definition information is a valuable corporate asset
  • haven't defined the information needed for product development
  • don't know what their product development workflow is
  • have manual release and change management
  • have many stand-alone databases in each department
  • don't have computer-based configuration management
  • haven't integrated PDM to other computer systems
*Stage 2 - Awakening*
Companies at this stage have characteristics such as:
  • have introduced some local PDM applications for specific activities
  • sometimes (i.e. 15-40% of exchanges) exchange data over a network with customers and supply chain partners
  • manually manage 50-75% of engineering drawings on traditional media
  • have started to define the information needed for product development
  • haven't defined the product development process
  • have mainly manual release and change management
  • have many departmental stand-alone vaults and databases
  • have an ineffective configuration management system
  • have basic integration between PDM and CAD, but some manual intervention is still required
  • have few users of PDM
  • have limited electronic transfer of data between a few departments
  • use basic PDM functionality such as vaulting
*Stage 3 - Adapting*
Companies at this stage have characteristics such as:
  • use PDM in many departments
  • often (i.e. 40-75% of exchanges) exchange data over a network with customers and supply chain partners
  • have a common and well-defined company-wide PDM approach
  • understand that product definition information is valuable
  • have listed the major documents, data and other information needed for product development
  • have defined parts of the product development process in detail
  • have automated workflow for activities such as release control and change management
  • have a cross-functional electronic vault
  • have basic integration between PDM and several other systems such as CAD and ERP, but some manual intervention is required
  • have many PDM users in Engineering / R&D / product development
  • communicate product definition data electronically between several departments
  • have several PDM applications in use - some of which are integrated
*Stage 4 - Leading*
Companies at this stage have characteristics such as:
  • have enterprise-wide PDM
  • usually (i.e. more than 75% of exchanges) exchange data over a network with customers and supply chain partners
  • have more than 95% of all product definition information available in electronic form
  • value product definition information as a strategic corporate asset
  • have fully defined all information needed for product development and modification
  • have fully defined the product development and product modification processes
  • have more than 95% of all Engineering Changes managed electronically
  • have full integration between PDM and all associated computer systems
  • have many PDM users both inside and outside Engineering / R&D / product development
  • have electronic transfer of data and documents between all departments
  • have fully integrated PDM applications such as data and document management, release management, engineering change control, workflow management, component management, configuration management, project management
  • use most of the functionality in their PDM systems
* Question *
Which Stage is your organization at (or most nearly at)? 1, 2, 3 or 4?
Please e-mail us your answer (just the one number) in the body of this e-mail reply.

* Thank you *
Thank you. The result of the survey will be published in the April 24 issue.
We'd be grateful if you would e-mail a copy of 2PDM to PDM users and implementers on your mailing list. This will help improve the statistical basis of the survey result.

Vendors! EDM/PDM events are great places to meet fellow vendors, system integrators and consultants. And perhaps some potential users.
Each issue of 2PDM is read by nearly 20,000 potential users.
For more information on getting your message to a large number of potential users view the Media Sheet or mail to pdm@2pdm.com
