* Welcome *
Welcome to this issue of 2PDM, an e-zine distributed every two weeks on a free subscription basis.

* Of CPC/PLM and EDM/PDM *
We recently carried out a survey of companies implementing CPC/PDM and EDM/PDM to find out which benefits they are looking for and which challenges they are facing.

The top 5 benefits identified for CPC/PLM were :
  • Increased revenues
  • Reduced cost of goods sold
  • Increased capability for innovation
  • Better lifetime service to customers
  • More control over product development projects
whereas the top 5 benefits identified for EDM/PDM were :
  • Data under control
  • Engineering change time reduced
  • Data available to all users
  • Reduced Time to Market
  • Reduced development cycles
The 5 most important challenges identified for CPC/PLM were :
  • Lack of clarity about the company's scope of CPC/PLM, and about what to integrate
  • Uncertainty about the Return On Investment of CPC/PLM
  • Doubts about vendor ability to deliver integrations and full solutions
  • Concerns about the lack of specific CPC/PLM competence among vendor and system integrator people
  • Difficulty of defining the limits of responsibility between vendors and system integrators
It's surprising to see that so many companies are challenged by the definition, scope and ROI of CPC/PLM. Clarification of these issues is one of the first steps in our consulting assignments. We tell our clients that there is little to be gained by starting a CPC/PLM implementation project if they are not clear about scope and ROI.

During the clarification of these issues, we're often asked what a standard CPC/PLM solution would contain. We reply that there's no such thing as a standard CPC/PLM solution, every company being so different. However we often see similar components in solutions. The four components with the major percentage contributions tend to be :
  • EDM/PDM (20%)
  • CAD/CAM/CAE (20%)
  • Configuration Management (10%)
  • Collaboration software (10%)
